Remembrance Day is one of the most important events in our Squadron calendar. We take the time on November 11th to commemorate the sacrifices made by Canadian service people in the conflicts around the world. Normally we parade with the Port Moody Legion and the Sea and Army Cadet Corps in downtown Port Moody, but this year is different. As the school is not available for in person training, the only activities scheduled for this week is the virtual Remembrance Day ceremony on Wednesday, and Senior Ground School classes on Monday and Thursday. No cadets will parade on Tuesday or Wednesday, and the offices will not be open.
We have been invited by the Royal Canadian Air Force Association to view a special virtual Remembrance Day ceremony from Calgary. The guest for this event is our own Commander of Cadets and Junior Rangers, Commodore Kurtz. She will be joining the ceremony virtually, and I feel it appropriate that we participate. Because this is hosted in Calgary, the ceremony will be starting one hour earlier than we would normally be commemorating Remembrance Day here in the Lower Mainland. I expect all cadets to attend the ceremony starting at 0945 hrs (9:45 am) on Wednesday 11 November 2020. It should last no more than 45 minutes.
As it is not a “Zoom” type meeting, no logon is needed, nor cameras or microphones. Uniform is authorized. Some may think that since we can not be seen, wearing a uniform might be unnecessary – I would disagree. Though we are not on public parade, we honour those who have fallen by being in a uniform similar to one they wore while making the supreme sacrifice. They will know that we are remembering them.
